At A Safe Place bereaved parents find a place to share their grief with others who have experienced the death of their child. The retreat is facilitated by other bereaved parents, professional counselors and ministers.
The retreat includes time for group conversations on particular topics such as handling the reactions of others to your loss, strengthening a marriage in the midst of loss, where is God in the loss of a child?, grief within the extended family, celebrating the life of the one lost. The main goal is to provide a safe, spiritual environment where bereaved parents are able to share their grief and find hope and healing.
A past participant, Ruth Hinson, spoke of her experience at A Safe Place in this way:
"The spiritual and emotional encouragement of A Safe Place helped me to realize that I can make it through the pain of losing our daughter. I didn't know what to expect when we arrived. Would I run sobbing into our room when faced with talking about our daughter's death? No, not at all. Others comforted me as we cried together. And it's OK to cry together. Seeking help through A Safe Place helped me find comfort and to understand that I can live through it. Just take it one step at a time."
